What our name means to us
“Thread Well” is a small instruction we try to follow on every order: put the needle in where the letter starts, keep the spacing even, and stitch the word exactly as it was asked for. Our logo shows a needle passing through a T and a W, with the thread curling round the last letter. It is a reminder that the whole shop is about letters done carefully.

What we make
We keep the range focused on garments that carry embroidery well and that people actually wear week after week.

The designs
Our designs fall into six themes. Monogram & Name is the heart of the shop: three-letter serif monograms, stacked initials, circle monograms, a first name in script, varsity arch names, a bridal “Mrs.” crewneck with the year on the cuff. Bookish Embroidery is for readers — a little stack of spines, an open book with “just one more chapter”, “book club” in script. Hobby & Interest covers the garden club, knitting, coffee, hiking, houseplants and backyard birds. Holiday & Seasonal brings pumpkins, a tree farm, snowflakes, a friendly ghost and a running-stitch heart. Mama & Family puts children’s and grandchildren’s names on sleeves and stems. Teacher & School has apples, pencils, classroom labels and a senior-year quarter-zip.
Every design is drawn as our own artwork. We do not stitch school crests, team marks, licensed characters, brand logos or book-cover art; you can read why in our Intellectual Property Policy.
How personalising works
We chose the simplest method we know. There is no design app and no upload form. You choose the product, size and garment colour on the product page (and the thread colour, placement or style where a product offers them), add it to your cart, and at checkout you type your personal details into the Order notes box.
- Pick your item. A crewneck, hoodie, quarter-zip, tee or cap in your size and colour.
- Write your letters. Initials, a name, a date or a short line in Order notes, exactly as you want them — capitals, spelling and punctuation included. For a traditional three-letter monogram, list the letters in the order you want them stitched, for example “J S M” for Jane Mary Smith, with the surname initial in the larger centre position.
- Choose a thread colour. Antique Gold, Ivory, Navy, Black, Blush Pink or Forest. Pick it on the product page where there is a Thread Color option; otherwise add it to the same note. If you leave it out, we use the default described on the product page.
We embroider what you write and do not send a proof or mockup before production. That keeps orders moving, but it means your note is the final word, so please read it twice. If you notice a mistake, you have 24 hours to change it through Cancel or Change an Order. If a note is unclear or too long for the design, we email you before we start.
Ordering for a group
Book clubs, grade teams and families often order together. One person can place the order for everyone: add each piece to the cart and list every name with its size and colour in one note, in the same order as the cart. For example: “M Sand – Grace; L Sage – Priya; XL Navy – Dee”. If you would rather check a large group order first, email us before you buy.
The letter styles we stitch
| Style | Looks like | Works best for |
|---|---|---|
| Classic serif monogram | Three capitals, larger centre letter | Gifts, brides, anyone who likes tradition |
| Stacked initials | Two or three capitals in a small column | A quiet left-chest mark on a hoodie |
| Circle monogram | Three letters shaped to fit a round outline | A polished quarter-zip |
| Script | Joined, flowing letters | First names, “mama”, “Mrs.” |
| Varsity arch | Outlined block capitals in a gentle curve | Surnames, nicknames, town names up to ten letters |
| Small serif capitals | Neat, evenly spaced uppercase | Lists of names down a sleeve, a year on a cuff |
When something is not right
Embroidery is detailed work, and we would rather hear about a problem than have you put up with it. If a letter does not match your note, a stitch has come loose, the wrong size arrived, or the parcel is taking longer than expected, write to us with your order number and, if it helps, a photo. Wrong or faulty pieces are put right; a piece that simply is not what you hoped for can still come back within 60 days with a free return label. The Returns & Exchanges page walks through each step.
The rules we keep for every order
We would rather publish a few clear commitments and keep them than promise more than we can deliver. These are the same on every page of the site, on every product and in every email.

Two things we deliberately do not do. We do not post fake reviews, countdown timers or “only a few left” messages; if we ever show reviews, they will be from real customers. And we do not describe our pieces with claims we cannot back up — when we are not sure of something, we say so.
A short guide to choosing
Crewneck, hoodie, quarter-zip or tee?
For a classic monogram, a crewneck is the traditional choice: the letters sit high on a smooth chest and the sweatshirt layers under a coat. A hoodie is the cosiest and the most casual; choose it for someone who lives in hoodies already. A quarter-zip looks a little sharper and suits graduates, teachers and anyone who wears a collar to work. A tee is right for warm months, for layering under a cardigan and for small left-chest names.
Which size?
Our tops are unisex, which usually means a straighter, roomier cut than women’s fits. Many people take their usual size for a relaxed fit, one size down for a neater line, or one size up for an oversized look. The Size Guide explains how to measure a garment you already own and compare. Caps adjust at the back and beanies stretch, so they are an easy choice when you do not know someone’s size.
Which thread colour?
Contrast makes letters readable from across a room: Ivory or Antique Gold on Navy, Forest Green, Maroon or Black; Navy or Forest on Sand, Ivory, Heather Grey or Sage. For a subtle, tone-on-tone look, choose a thread close to the garment colour. Blush Pink is soft on Ivory and Heather Grey; Antique Gold reads as warm and a little festive on almost anything.
Caring for embroidery
Turn the garment inside out, wash it cool on a gentle cycle, and dry it on low or flat. Do not iron directly over the stitches; if you need to press the garment, iron it inside out around the design. Spot clean caps and let them dry on a rounded shape.
Gifts we are asked for most
Some pieces come up again and again. For a bride, the “Mrs.” crewnecks with the surname in script and the wedding year on the cuff. For a new mother, a mama crewneck with the children’s names stitched down the left sleeve. For a grandmother, a garden of flowers with a grandchild’s name on every stem. For a teacher at the end of the year, an apple and a name on the left chest, often ordered by a whole class of parents together. For a reader, a little stack of spines or “just one more chapter”. In every case, the gift is personal because the words are yours — we only supply the thread.
Where we ship from and to
Thread Well ships from the USA. We deliver to four countries — the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand — free of charge, with no minimum order. We do not ship elsewhere at the moment. Duties and taxes for parcels outside the United States depend on the destination country’s rules; if you have a question about your country, write to us before you order.
Paying and privacy
Prices are in US dollars. The payment options available to you are shown at checkout, and the details are on our Payment Methods page. We do not see or store full card numbers. The names and dates you type in Order notes are used only to stitch your order; read more in our Privacy Policy.
